How can we manage the climate risks from greenhouse gases already emitted?
SRM research is now conducted in dozens of countries around the globe, and there is a wide range of views on its scientific and human dimensions. At the extremes of the debate, a few people have already made up their minds: on one side, some activists seek to ban even research; on the other side, entrepreneurs are trying to sell SRM “cooling credits” for private profit. In the middle is a diverse global community trying to shed light on fundamental issues:
Hundreds of voices from around the world, and across the spectrum of opinion, will come together at the Degrees Global Forum to discuss these issues.
The event will take place from 16-20 August 2027 in Istanbul and will be the world’s largest SRM conference to date. It is hosted by the Degrees Initiative, a non-profit dedicated to building the capacity of developing countries and emerging economies to evaluate SRM. Degrees supports more than 40 SRM research teams across the Global South in both physical and social sciences. Each team will bring at least two researchers to the conference, where they will be joined by the leading SRM experts from the Global North, NGO representatives, policymakers, thought leaders, journalists and funders to discuss the scientific, social, and political dimensions of SRM.
The Forum will have a range of sessions and activities to appeal to SRM specialists, climate generalists, and the SRM-curious alike. There will be:
In addition, the Global Forum is being held concurrently with the 16th annual meeting of the Geoengineering Modelling Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP). SRM modellers can apply to attend this meeting on Friday 20 August when they register for the Forum.
